The reader of any set of early medieval annals is likely to be struck not only by the topics which the author included but also by his omissions. Why did the writer of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tell us about the profusion of snakes in Sussex in 774, but not mention the outcome of the Battle of Otford? This paper considers some of the possible methodological approaches to analysing omission as evidence in early medieval annals. The main focus is on eighth-and ninth-century sections of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, along with some consideration of contemporary Carolingian annals. It is argued that it is sometimes possible to appreciate the sources of information available to annalists through careful consideration of their texts. This can allow an assessment of whether the omission of apparently important information was deliberate or merely resulted from ignorance, which in turn can illuminate the underlying strategies of the text.

In 1979, Mel Powell re-entered the creative world of composition after a decade of near silence. Although he has received wide recognition for works of this late period, his music has remained virtually untouched by formal analysis. A variety of analytical methods provides a comprehensive approach to Powell works from a productive ten-year span. Examples are drawn from the following works: (1) Woodwind Quintet (1985); (2) Modules for Chamber Orchestra (1985); (3) \"Die Violine\" (1987); (4) Three Madrigals for Flute Alone (1988); (5) Setting for Two Pianos (1988); (6) Duplicates: A Concerto for Two Pianos (1990); (7) Settings for Small Orchestra (1992); (8) Piano Trio (1994); (9) Sonatina for Flute Alone (1995). Chapter One is concerned with the general characteristics of Powell's musical language with an emphasis on pitch and rhythmic structures. Chapter Two begins with an introductory look at Powell's aesthetic world and continues with a discussion on his formal approach to music. Traditional and nontraditional organizational principles are shown to be responsible for formal units both small and large. Compositional techniques such as developing variation enable the composer to create associational mazes, an achievement linked to the music of Schoenberg and Brahms. The effects of this and other compositional techniques used by Powell include allusion and illusion. The final Chapter Three provides an analysis of the first movement of Three Madrigals for Flute Alone (1988). The monophonic texture and length of the work permit an in depth analysis without being unwieldy. Previously employed analytical methods are incorporated into the analysis to demonstrate their relevancy.
